Introduced at the end of 2011, the Hermès Arlequin Collection takes its name from Harlequin, the centuries-old theatrical character recognized for his multicolored patchwork costume. The collection marked one of Hermès’ earliest and most elaborate explorations of six-color leather construction, translating the costume’s irregular arrangement of colors into the Birkin and Kelly silhouettes. Produced for a relatively brief period in the early 2010s, the collection featured two principal color palettes: one dominated by Orange, Sanguine and vivid blues, and another combining Ultraviolet with muted blues, grays and earthy neutrals. The Arlequin has since become a distinctive example of Hermès’ experimental limited-edition designs.

Unlike conventional single-color Birkins, the Arlequin is constructed from individually cut and joined leather panels, with the contrasting colors extending across the front, back, gussets, handles and base. Taurillon Clémence provides a naturally grained, supple exterior, complemented by Chèvre leather lining and palladium hardware. The collection’s short production history and unusual construction make surviving examples particularly interesting to collectors of archival Hermès. On the secondary market, Arlequin Birkins appear less frequently than standard configurations, although resale values vary significantly according to condition, colorway, structural integrity and included accessories. Their significance lies in the combination of limited production, complex color blocking and a design that has not returned to Hermès’ regular collection.
